Josephte Sarcee was born in 1790 to a Sarcee chief and a French-Canadian fur trader. She was raised in the Sarcee community, learning the traditions and values of her people. As a young woman, she married Jean Baptiste Bruneau, a French-Canadian fur trader, and together they had several children.
In 1811, Josephte's husband was killed by a group of Blackfoot warriors. Josephte was left alone to care for her young children and to provide for her family. She did this by trading furs and pemmican with the Hudson's Bay Company. She also became a skilled horsewoman and hunter, and she was known for her courage and determination.
In 1820, Josephte married Joseph Paul Durand, another French-Canadian fur trader. Durand was a kind and loving husband, and he supported Josephte in her trading activities. Together, they built a successful fur trading business and became one of the most prominent families in the Canadian West.
Josephte and Durand had several children, including Jean, who would go on to become a famous fur trader and explorer. Josephte was a devoted mother, and she raised her children to be strong and independent. She also taught them the importance of education and the value of hard work.
Josephte was a successful businesswoman and a respected member of her community. She was known for her intelligence, her courage, and her determination. She was also a generous and compassionate woman, and she often helped those in need.
Josephte Sarcee died in 1857 at the age of 67. She was buried in the Sarcee cemetery, and her grave is still a popular tourist destination. Josephte's life is a testament to the strength and resilience of Indigenous women in the Canadian West.
