In 1955, a group of scientists and intellectuals gathered in the small Canadian town of Pugwash to discuss the dangers of nuclear weapons. The meeting was organized by Bertrand Russell and Albert Einstein, who had issued a manifesto calling for an end to nuclear testing and the development of nuclear weapons. The Pugwash Conferences have been held every year since then, and have played a vital role in promoting dialogue and understanding between scientists, policymakers, and the public on issues related to nuclear weapons and disarmament.
In From Pugwash to Putin, award-winning journalist and author Robert S. Norris takes readers on a gripping journey through the key moments and figures that shaped the development and deployment of nuclear weapons. Norris draws on his own extensive experience covering nuclear weapons issues to provide a unique and informed perspective on the challenges and dangers of the nuclear age.
The book begins with the Manhattan Project, the top-secret U.S. government program that developed the first atomic bombs. Norris provides a detailed account of the scientific and technical challenges involved in developing the bombs, as well as the political and ethical debates that surrounded the decision to use them against Japan. Norris concludes by examining the current state of nuclear weapons proliferation and the challenges of nuclear disarmament.
From Pugwash to Putin is an essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the dangers and challenges of the nuclear age. Norris's clear and engaging writing style makes complex technical and political issues accessible to a general audience. The book is also filled with fascinating historical anecdotes and personal stories that bring the history of nuclear weapons to life.
