About the Author

Gene Zion was an American author and illustrator of children's books. He is best known for his Harry The Dirty Dog series, which has sold over 10 million copies worldwide. Zion was born in New York City in 1913. He studied art at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. In 1943, he married Margaret Bloy Graham, a fellow artist. The couple had two children, John and Susan.

Zion began writing children's books in the early 1950s. His first book, The Plant Sitter, was published in 1952. Harry The Dirty Dog was published in 1956 and quickly became a bestseller. Zion wrote a total of six Harry The Dirty Dog books. He also wrote several other children's books, including No Roses for Harry! (1963) and The Sugar Mouse Cake (1965).

Zion died in 1972 at the age of 59. He is remembered as one of the most beloved children's book authors of all time.
