Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1925. His father was a Baptist minister and his mother was a homemaker. Malcolm's father was killed by white supremacists when Malcolm was six years old, and his mother was left to raise her eight children on her own.
Malcolm dropped out of school in the eighth grade and moved to Boston, where he worked as a shoeshine boy and a waiter. He also began to get involved in crime, and he was eventually arrested for burglary. While in prison, Malcolm read the autobiography of Frederick Douglass and was inspired by Douglass's message of self-reliance and Black pride.
After his release from prison, Malcolm joined the Nation of Islam, a black separatist organization led by Elijah Muhammad. Malcolm quickly rose through the ranks of the Nation of Islam, and he soon became one of Muhammad's top lieutenants.
Malcolm X was a powerful speaker, and he soon became known for his fiery speeches on Black Nationalism. He argued that African Americans should separate themselves from white society and create their own independent nation. Malcolm X also called for violence against whites, and he was often criticized for his extremist views.
In 1964, Malcolm X broke with the Nation of Islam and founded his own organization, the Muslim Mosque, Inc. Malcolm X continued to preach Black Nationalism, but he also began to advocate for more moderate policies. He met with white leaders and he called for a peaceful end to racism.
Malcolm X was assassinated in 1965 by three members of the Nation of Islam. He was 39 years old.
Malcolm X was a complex and controversial figure. He was a brilliant speaker and a powerful advocate for the rights of African Americans. He was also a flawed man, and his extremist views often alienated people. But there is no doubt that Malcolm X was one of the most important figures in the Civil Rights Movement, and his legacy continues to inspire people today.
