Early Life and Career
Jimmy Devellano was born in Toronto, Ontario, on May 12, 1949. He grew up playing hockey and quickly became one of the top players in his age group. He was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1968 and made his NHL debut in 1970.
Devellano played for the Maple Leafs for four seasons before being traded to the Vancouver Canucks in 1974. He played for the Canucks for two seasons before retiring from playing in 1976.
Coaching Career
After retiring from playing, Devellano began his coaching career. He was an assistant coach with the Canucks for two seasons before being named head coach of the team in 1979.
Devellano coached the Canucks for four seasons, leading them to the playoffs twice. He was fired in 1983 and spent the next two seasons as an assistant coach with the New York Islanders.
Management Career
In 1985, Devellano was named general manager of the Vancouver Canucks. He held that position for 12 seasons, leading the team to the playoffs nine times. He was fired in 1997 and spent the next two seasons as a consultant with the NHL.
In 1999, Devellano was named president and general manager of the Florida Panthers. He held that position for four seasons before being fired in 2003.
In 2006, Devellano was named president of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He held that position for four seasons before retiring in 2010.
