Born into slavery in South Carolina in 1768, Pierpoint escaped to freedom in Canada in 1792. He settled in the British colony of Upper Canada (now Ontario) and became a successful farmer and businessman. However, when the War of 1812 broke out between Britain and the United States, Pierpoint saw an opportunity to serve his new country and fight for the freedom of his fellow African Canadians.
In 1813, Pierpoint approached the British authorities with a proposal to form an all-black military unit. His request was met with skepticism and resistance, but Pierpoint refused to be deterred. He argued that African Canadians were just as capable and loyal as any other British subject, and that they deserved the chance to prove their worth on the battlefield.
Eventually, Pierpoint's persistence paid off. In July 1813, the British government authorized the formation of the Coloured Corps of Upper Canada. Pierpoint was appointed captain of the unit, and he set about recruiting and training his men.
The Coloured Corps quickly became known for its discipline and fighting prowess. They saw action at several key battles during the War of 1812, including the Battle of Queenston Heights, the Battle of York (Toronto),and the Battle of Lundy's Lane. In each engagement, the Coloured Corps fought bravely and distinguished themselves in battle.
After the war, the Coloured Corps was disbanded, and Pierpoint returned to civilian life. However, his legacy lived on. The Coloured Corps had proven that African Canadians were capable of serving their country with honor and distinction, and they had helped to pave the way for the full integration of African Canadians into Canadian society.
Today, the story of Richard Pierpoint and the Coloured Corps of Upper Canada is an inspiring tale of courage, determination, and the power of human agency. It is a story that should be told and retold, for it is a story that reminds us of the indomitable spirit of the human race.
