In 1967, Redington was one of the founders of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The Iditarod is a 1,000-mile sled dog race that runs from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. The race is one of the most challenging and prestigious sled dog races in the world.
Redington won the Iditarod five times, in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, and 1977. He was also the first person to win the race three consecutive times. Redington's victories helped to popularize the sport of mushing and made the Iditarod one of the most famous sled dog races in the world.
Redington was also a successful businessman and owned a number of businesses, including a construction company and a kennel. He was also a strong advocate for Alaska Natives and served on the Alaska Native Commission.
Redington died in 2019 at the age of 83. He is remembered as one of the greatest mushers of all time and as the "Father of the Iditarod." His legacy continues to inspire mushers and sled dog enthusiasts around the world.
