In the annals of American history, few figures loom larger than Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. As leaders of the Confederate and Union armies during the Civil War, their epic duel shaped the destiny of a nation.
Now, in a captivating new dual biography, historian Ron Chernow tells the intertwined stories of these two extraordinary men. Drawing on a wealth of primary sources, Chernow paints a vivid portrait of their lives, their motivations, and their fateful conflict.
Lee, the scion of a prominent Virginia family, was a brilliant military strategist and a devout Christian. Grant, the son of a tanner from Ohio, was a tenacious fighter and a skilled tactician.
Their paths first crossed in the Mexican-American War, where they fought side by side. But when the Civil War erupted in 1861, they found themselves on opposite sides of the battlefield.
Lee led the Confederate Army to a series of early victories, but Grant's Union forces gradually gained the upper hand. The turning point came in the bloody Battle of Gettysburg, where Grant's forces inflicted a crushing defeat on Lee's army.
After Gettysburg, Lee's army was forced into retreat. Grant pursued him relentlessly, and in April 1865, Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House. The Civil War was over, and the Union was preserved.
But the story of Lee and Grant did not end there. After the war, both men dedicated themselves to rebuilding their country. Lee became president of Washington College, and Grant served as president of the United States from 1869 to 1877.
In their dual biography, Chernow explores the complex relationship between Lee and Grant. Despite their different backgrounds and beliefs, they shared a deep respect for each other as soldiers and men.
Lee and Grant: A Dual Biography is a magisterial work of history that brings to life two of the most iconic figures in American history. It is a story of courage, conflict, and reconciliation, and it offers a profound insight into the nature of leadership and the meaning of the American Civil War.
